Zeppelins over Ireland?
Monday May 26, 2008
What are the odds on seeing a Zeppelin over Ireland? Currently slightly less favorable than on Ireland winning the Eurovision song contest or the soccer world cup. But why not? It might be a case of "who dares wins", helicopter sightseeing flights already being very popular.
I just read in an aviation journal that a fourth Zeppelin NT has been built ... for a US start-up company that will use the hulking airship for sightseeing flights over the San Francisco bay area. Which would make for great views both from the airship and from the ground. And, should they ever decide to film "The Rock II", would be a great thing for Nicholas Cage to cling to. Or blow up with the baddie on board. Hang on, Roger Moore already did that in "A View to a Kill", scrap that idea.
But here's another idea, seriously - I can image the modern airship on tours in Ireland. As the Zeppelin, apart from its immense size, is far less intrusive than airplanes and a smoother ride than helicopters. It also is the best observation platform you can get. And I can even think of potential routes - a long tour down the spectacular west coast, taking in Slieve League and the Cliffs of Moher for instance. Or a flight along the Boyne Valley, watching the magnificence of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth glide past from a bird's point of view. These are but two routes that I would book today.
If there is an entrepreneur out there reading and seriously considering this - feel free to "steal" my idea. Then again cost considerations might kill any such plans fairly quickly. So we mere mortals will have to continue on the ground. But at least we can dream of standing on the shoulders of giants ...
