Prince Pulls Bloomsday Gig
Thursday June 12, 2008
If you are heading for Dublin next Monday, I sincerely hope it is for all the right reasons. Citing undisclosed (and ever-popular) problems beyond their control, the concert promotors have cancelled a concert by Prince. The artist formerly known as Symbol was due to play in Croke Park. But rumors concerning flagging ticket sales and a possible cancellation had been heard for some time.
Not cancelled and going ahead in all its anachronistic splendor is Bloomsday. Traditionally celebrated on June 16th to keep the memory of Leopold Bloom's odyssee through Dublin alive. This epic journey was described in James Joyce's "Ulysses", a book often bought, less frequently started in earnest and rarely finished.
Join in the fun if you are in Dublin. If only to see prominent gay rights activist, Joycean scholar and senator David Norris reciting Joyce. While wearing a rather silly Victorian ensemble. All part of a traditional Bloomsday in Dublin ... priceless and now also Prince-less.
