Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008 - The Best of Irish Music
Thursday August 14, 2008
It seems like the Midlands are the place to be next week - Taoiseach Brian Cowen's home conuty of Offaly is honored to host the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2008. Tullamore will experience the largest festival of Irish music, song and dance from the 17th to the 24th of August. Around 200,000 people gathering, from all over the world, joining in the celebration of Irish musical culture.
The 57th Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann looks to be the largest event ever, returning to Tullamore for the second year in a row. Ireland's most central town will be hopping, skipping and swaying to the tune of more than 10,000 performers!
And try to stage the "Largest Session in the World", attempting to break the world record by involving over 3,500 musicians in an unrehearsed performance. This record attempt takes place on August 22nd in O'Connor Square, following the opening parade of Irish counties and countries. The good people of Tullamore won't be expecting begrudgery vrom the current record holders, though. The record stands at 2,700 people banging, piping and fiddling away. It was set was set last year at the same location. So whatever the outcome, Tullamore keeps the record.
