Hellboy, the Golden Army and Cod Celtic Connections

Wednesday August 27, 2008
Guillermo del Toro's new "Hellboy" movie looks set to bring a boost to Ireland's popularity, more exactly to the Antrim coast. After Jackie Chan has already fought baddies hiding underneath Dunluce Castle ("The Medaillion"), Ron Perlman has now been allowed to kick some bad guys' assets around the Giant's Causeway.

Unfortunately it is all CGI, as the actors never flew into Ireland. Footage of the World Heritage Site has simply been spliced into the movie to provide authentic local flavor.

This fits well in with the cod-Celtic mythology used in the movie. There you have Nuala and Nuada, as Celtic as the secret love-children of Enya and Legolas, representing good and evil. With evil trying to employ the "Golden Army", a Celtic kind of mechanized infantry (literally).

Good movie ... great entertainment ... goofy Irish connection. Ah well, there is still an image gallery of the Giant's Causeway to show you what Hellboy really missed.
