Lissadel House - A Short Note
Saturday February 14, 2009
Today an email from a reader reminded me of a closure I forgot to mention - Lissadell House. The historic house in County Sligo, once home to rebel Constance Markiewicz and connected to poet W.B.Yeats, has been closed to the public by its owners.
Owners Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy, who purchased the estate from Sir Josslyn Gore-Booth a few years ago, are at loggerheads with Sligo County Council over a public right of way ... that they were apparently ensured did not exist. Having renovated the house, added exhibitions and investing a pile of money, Walsh and Cassidy managed to raise visitor numbers from 4.000 to 40.000 in a short period of time.
A lawsuit brought against the council is pending, but the house and estate now closed until further notice.
