Today the RMS "Titanic" turns 100 - on May 31st, 1911, the ship was launched at the Harland & Wolff Shipyards in Belfast.
Yet she is more connected with Cobh, the harbour in the south-west of Ireland. Cobh used to be known as "Queenstown" in the old days. And became notorious not only through mass emigration, but also through two shipping tragedies. In 1912 the "Titanic" used Cobh as her last port-of-call before heading onto her inaugural transatlantic journey. It was to be her last port-of-call ever.
And when in 1915 the "Lusitania" was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale, many victims of this atrocity were laid to rest in Cobh.
But enough doom and gloom - Cobh has re-invented itself as a pleasant seaside town with a colourful harbour area. Just right for a visit ... and as a first taste you may peruse my Cobh image gallery.
