You will find castles in Ireland - many in a state of disrepair, but impressive still. Some heavily converted to more luxurious dwellings. And some even in official use today. Go and visit, Irish castles can make a vacation a truly historic trip. And here are some highlights ...

If you are interested in the Middle Ages at all, Trim is the place to visit. The Meath town has an old-fashioned town centre and a whole host of medieval ruins. The massive Trim Castle being the largest and most famous of them.

Visitors might be excused for thinking that Enniskillen Castle is best viewed from a distance - because it is. The vista across the Erne with the fairy-tale Watergate is as romantic as it gets.

Finally, Ormond Castle is reputed to be the best preserved Elizabethan manor house in Ireland - in fact there are not many buildings from the Tudor period as intact as this. Slightly hidden away in plain sight ...
