Bring On the Irish Jubilee

By January 2, 2013

Follow me on:

So, 2013 ... it is finally here. And it kicks off with a government decision that makes you roll your eyes and shake your head: numberplate, which should start with 13 (as in the current year) will be adjusted to 131 and 132 (as in first half and second half on 2013). The reason? The motor industry brought forward a case for superstitious Irish motorists not wanting to have a 13 at the start of their registration. And you thought that all the irrational madness went out of this world with the non-event that was the Mayan apocalypse ...

Anyway, in this year of 2013 we will have a few noteworthy jubilees to remember. A hundred years ago three armed militias were formed, reflecting the rising tension in Irish society and foreshadowing future bloodshed. Three hundred years ago Dean Swift came to Dublin. A thousand years ago marital tension in the household of the High King really boiled over. And 25 years ago Ireland beat England at soccer ... even the Mayans could not have predicted that, I tell y'all!
