Saint Mary's Cathedral has served the faithful of Limerick since the 12th century – it was built under the last king of Munster, Donal Mor O'Brien. The western portal is still original.
The main parts of today's Saint Mary's Cathedral are, however, of a younger vintage. Major building work was undertaken in the 15th century and the oaken choir was finished in 1489. It is the best of its kind in the whole of Ireland.Twentythree misericords, a sort of „emergency seating“ during mass, are carved in the shape of fantastic creatures.
Don't miss the many fine tombs and, provided the weather helps, the view over Limerick City from tower.
