Bram Stoker
Author of "Dracula" - Visiting Ireland's Literary Heritage

By Bernd Biege, About.com

Bram Stoker is maybe Dublin's most successful literary export ... at least if you rely on common knowledge. Everybody knows (though not necessarily has read) „Dracula“.

Dates

Born 1847 in Dublin,
died 1912 in England.

Who was Bram Stoker?

Abraham Stoker, shortened first name „Bram“, was born in Dublin and chose the highly unadventurous career of a civil servant. Always nursing a fondness for the theatre, Stoker chucked in his job in 1879 to become acting manager of Shakespearean actor Henry Irving. At this time he was already writing in his spare time.

In 1897 Stoker hit the publishing jackpot with his supernatural thriller „Dracula“, a rewriting of vampire lore in an unusual format that conjured „authenticity“ by relying on diary entries, letters and excerpts from other writings.

Important Works of Bram Stoker

  • “Dracula“ (1897)
  • “The Jewel of Seven Stars“ (1903)
  • “The Lair of the White Worm“ (1911)
