The main locations for cruising are as follows:
  • The Shannon Navigation
This network of lakes and rivers offers sheer endless routes and a number of attractions like Clonmacnoise right next to the water. Starting in the Shannon Estuary near Limerick and ending in Lough Allen, linked to the Grand Canal near Banagher and to the Shannon-Erne Waterway near Leitrim.
  • The Shannon-Erne Waterway
Connecting the Shannon and Erne Navigations between Leitrim and Aghalane, using no less than 16 locks over just forty miles.
  • The Erne Navigation
Mainly encompasses Upper and Lower Lough Erne between Belleek and Belturbet, a connection to Dublin via the Shannon-Erne Waterway, the Shannon Navigation and the Royal Canal would be possible. Take note that there is no access to Donegal Bay at Belleek.
  • The Grand Canal
This old canal connects Dublin with Ballinasloe and is navigable up to the Shannon near Banagher. At the Dublin end sea locks open into the Liffey and Dublin Bay.
  • The Royal Canal
Running between Dublin and Richmond Harbor on the Shannon, the canal is only navigable up to Abbeyshrule. On the Dublin side access from the Liffey depends on the tides (the sea lock not having been restored).
  • The Barrow Navigation
A lesser known but highly attractive area to cruise on, running between the Grand Canal and New Ross. The Barrow can be extremely shallow in summer.
