Avalon House owes its name to Arthurian legend, but nothing else – using an old hospital building next to the shrine of Saint Valentine. But it is one of the venerable backpacker hostels of Dublin with a clientele from hardened travelers to families on a budget. Being just outside the city center it has a fairly quiet location and still is within walking distance to all attractions (and Temple Bar).

Scoring points with the eco crowd, Avalon House is big on recycling and uses wind and solar energy.

The hostel refunds your Dublin Bus ticket if you use line 16A from the airport, has its own in-house cinema, will take you on a free guided walk of the city and even serve a light breakfast and wash your clothes. Use the communal kitchen for preparing a budget meal – though the cafe has a very good reputation.

Recommended?

Maybe the best hostel if you don't need to stay directly in the city center but would like to have an easy walk there. Located in a (safe) multicultural area it retains a certain alternative flair.
