We came upon the Khyber Tandoori by chance - tucked away in South William Street (Numbers 44 and 45 at the St Stephen's Green end, telephone 01-6704855) this is not a place you will find immediately when strolling around Dublin. Though only a few steps away from Grafton Street, St Stephen's Green and the Gaiety Theatre. Looking for an inviting eatery in the area nothing could have been more inviting than a doorman in complete Pakistani costume with a white turban like a guiding beacon. And he provided a first taste of the unobtrusive service by greeting us and then leaving us to study the menu displayed without interruption. As the prices were in the upper middle range and the selection of dishes good we entered ...
It being a frosty cold night the restaurant's owners had decided to pull all the stops on the heating - the resulting overheated atmosphere being the one jarring note during the visit.
After some starters, excellent kebabs and bahjis, we turned our attention to the main course. We dined on a mixed platter, a chicken curry, a meat concoction still sizzling in an iron pot and a vegetarian curry. All were very well prepared, spicy without being too hot and with the taste of the less spicy ingredients still identifiable. Portions should be rated as adequate - a good eater will be satisfied. Sweets and coffee rounded the meal off, again to the satisfaction to all.
Recommended - expect to pay at least 25 per person for an evening meal including one non-alcoholic drink.
