Hotels in Dublin - Harcourt Hotel, Harcourt Street

About.com Rating 3

By , About.com Guide

The Bottom Line
The Harcourt Hotel is ideal if you are looking for a good, reasonably priced accommodation right next to Dublin's city center. Five minutes walk will bring you to St Stephen's Green and Grafton Street. The hotel is located in a "safe" area of the city and with good public transport connections - expect no parking space though. It would be wise to expect no enthusiastic service either.
Pros
  • Within walking distance to city center and St Stephen's Green.
  • Reasonably priced and and sized rooms.
  • Own restaurant and bars.
  • Live Irish music in the Music Bar.
Cons
  • Service can be indifferent at times.
  • Rooms may have maintenance problems.
  • No parking provided, nearest secure overnight parking ten minutes walk away.
Description
  • Central hotel near to St Stephen's Green with 104 rooms.
  • Converted Georgian terrace with own restaurant and bars.
  • The building is a historic landmark - George Bernard Shaw once lived here.
Guide Review - Hotels in Dublin - Harcourt Hotel, Harcourt Street

This hotel is a bit of a mixed bag - on the positive side it can be a bargain for reasonable accommodation right in the heart of Dublin and it has a restaurant and bars to keep the visitor happy, even providing live Irish music at night. The 104 rooms are of a fair size tending to the small (as usual in most older Irish hotels) and furnished in a non-descript, practical style. They were very clean. No surprises here, but also no problems.

We had three rooms booked and were in for a surprise though - the window in one room could not be closed properly (and it was freezing cold outside), the toilet door in another room would not stay closed either. Both were fixed the next day. Unfortunately the open window meant not only a cold night but also a noisy night - noise from the street, especially caused by the LUAS trams running right underneath the window, kept my colleague awake for some time.

The restaurant served breakfast in a buffet style - while quality was fair, presentation lacked even canteen standard.

One thing that bugged us was the indifferent service - repeated e-mails enquiring about parking facilities (there are none) were not answered at all, a telephone conversation was inconclusive due to the receptionist not having a good grasp of English and the complaints about the room problems were countered with a very bored look at first.

All in all not an unpleasant stay - but the service and maintenance could definitely be improved.
